Configuring the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

It is highly recommended that all LLS clients utilize an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). In the case of a power outage or surge, the Mac mini or software elements can be broken. The UPS helps to prevent this damage by powering the Mac mini long enough to properly shut it down.

To purchase an Uninterruptible Power Supply, please follow the link below:

To properly set-up the UPS, follow the instructions below:

** Prior to starting, power down the Mac mini properly. This should not be performed while the location is in service if an LLS is already installed.

1. Plug the UPS into a wall outlet.

2. Plug the Mac mini power cord into an outlet on the UPS labeled “battery”.

3. Plug the USB cable into the UPS and then the Mac mini.

4. Turn on the UPS.

5. Turn on the Mac mini.

6. Once the Mac mini has booted up, navigate to System Preferences > Energy Saver.

7. Click the UPS Tab (Figure 1).

8. Click Shutdown Options… (Figure 2).

9. Enable Shutdown the computer when the time remaining on UPS battery is: (Figure 3).

10. Use the slider bar to set it at 5 min (Figure 4).

11. Click Done (Figure 5).

The UPS is now correctly configured to properly shutdown the Mac mini when 5 minutes of battery life remains on the UPS. This will help to prevent damage to the hardware or software running on the Mac mini.
