Troubleshooting your IDTech VP3300 Card Reader

An article detailing troubleshooting steps you can take if your VP3300 card reader fails to take transactions.

The VP3300 reader is a bluetooth device that can accept card payments through card swipes, insert (EMV), or tap to pay (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, etc.). If you find that the reader is not responding or accepting card transactions, here are some simple steps you can try to quickly resolve the issue.

Check the Indicator Lights

You can find detailed information about what each of the lights on your card reader signify here.

The very basics are that there are two sets of lights on the card reader. Four lights on the front, and three on the back.

The four lights on the front indicate when a transaction is processing, and when the reader is turned on.

The three lights on the back each have a specific function. You should see that the top LED light is flashing blue (either at a normal rate, or more slowly), and the bottom light is turned off. This indicates that the battery for the VP3300 is fine. If you see a flashing orange light, that means you should immediately plug the card reader into power in order to charge it.

A low battery is a common reason why card readers stop responding. If you notice that either the bottom light is flashing orange, or the top light is off, you likely need to charge your card reader.

Standby Mode

The reader automatically goes into standby mode whenever it is inactive. You'll know it's in standby mode if the blue light is flashing faster than normal. Simply press the power button on the side of the card reader to take it out of standby mode. After a few seconds, it will automatically reconnect to your iPad.

Unpair the Reader

If you are still having issues after checking the status of the reader, you may want to try disconnecting it from Lavu, and reconnecting it.

Navigate to Settings in the POS, and select Card Reader Settings. From here, tap Disconnect.

You may also want to log out of Lavu and force close the app (double tap the home button on the iPad and swipe up on the Lavu POS app).

Then log back in and reconnect the reader in the same place we disconnected it. Simply tap Scan Terminal to have the POS find the card reader via bluetooth, and tap on it when it appears.

Once reconnected, attempt a test transaction to see if the reader is working.
